Automatic Chart Selection

When you are exploring the visual and using the drill down history and the waterfall scheme is set to Auto, the visual will choose whether a running totals waterfall chart is used or a delta waterfall chart.

This is determined by the number of elements selected in the drill down history. See in the image below: In the left chart one element is selected in the drill down history. In the right chart two elements are selected and a delta waterfall chart is created.

An exception to this behavior is the case when two selected elements do not have any child elements in common. This for example the case with quarters of a year. Q1 and Q2 have obviously different children (Jan, Feb, Mar vs. Apr, May, Jun) and therefore no delta waterfall will be built.

Another example would be that you have two regions containing different states, like in the example below.
